Takeaways

  1. The design of an interface for a distinct hardware demanded cooperation among UX, ID, and HF.

  2. Voice and touch controls were merged, and the principles for an enhanced Smart Touch design system were established.

  3. Designing for a broader range of users was challenging, as UX had to accommodate the common needs and expectations of the various target groups.

  4. Reaching out to end consumers was also challenging, and I had to collaborate with partners for feedback sessions.

Ecosystem

Radios are now becoming a part of the connected ecosystem where the end user can connect to video security, work ticketing and inventory management with one integrated devices. ION targets different verticals such as Schools, Hospitals, Hotel, Manufacturing and Transportation at a time.

Research

  1. Before the initiation, the UX Team worked with the Research Team and conducted research in EMEA, APAC, NA, and LATAM areas. In total, there were 18 sessions with 66 participants. I generated exploratory use cases for the future to validate the needs from customers. After the feedback, I prioritized the use cases and shared those with the Product Team to shape the requirements.

  2. During the design phase, the team conducted 1st phase of Customer Touch Point Sessions with 20 customers. The goal was to validate the new design concepts, explore opportunities, and identify issues.

  3. Towards the end of the design process, we conducted 2nd phase of Customer Touch Point Sessions with 50 participants. The aim was to resolve the open items and validate the design decisions.

  4. Last but not least, Beta testing sessions were conducted to evaluate the functionality, reliability, and usability of the product & features.

Design Language

Motorola has a design system called Cobalt that spans multiple products. My team worked on defining the principles and behaviors of the unique class called Cobalt's Smart Touch for mission-critical handheld devices. We aim to provide information at a glance with large fonts, large targets, high contrast, and a clean interface. For eyes-up navigation the aim is to provide shallow UI structure for the end users. I applied these principles to this new product as well.

Final Design

I worked on all Smart Touch features and out of box experience. Shift Manager is one of the features that I picked to demonstrate on here. My aim was to come with the most efficient way for users to complete their shift related tasks. This includes login/logout experience, status update and radio alias information. Shift manager has dedicated widget embedded on the Home Screen with quick actions.

Design Process

  1. I was the Lead UX designer of this program and led the end-to-end design process for this project starting from ordering, till out of box experience.

  2. Research was heavily included for this project and I was actively included in research starting from exploratory research before the initiation.

  3. For design, I followed 2 weeks of design sprints in an agile environment. I collaborated with AP and BP developers at the same time to support both Radio and Android features on the device interface.

Target Users

For this product, the definition of the needs, expectations, goals and KPIs of target user was challenging as every field is very unique. However, they had some common needs such as a streamlined workforce, efficient communication and increased productivity. ION is a common approach to provide the best solution for both voice and data needs of our enterprise customers.
